Covid-19 Letter to Parents 18th May 2020
Dear Parents and Carers,
We are writing to you in these difficult times regarding HM Government’s recent announcement of their intention for schools to reopen by 1st June provided that Five Key Tests have been met.
To begin with only Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 pupils will attend. This return to school is deemed to be “safe” on the basis that reduced numbers will make effective social distancing possible.
The Government have indicated that Nurseries and Childminders should also open by this date. There seems to be an obvious inconsistency here! We can all see the importance of social distancing – and that it may be possible in schools with reduced numbers (although many teachers and their trade unions would disagree). However, it is hard to see how such “distancing” would be possible in a nursery – full of preschool children and even harder to imagine it in the confines of a home environment with “children of all ages.”
Personally, we are genuinely concerned both for our own safety and that of the children and families we serve. We feel that it would be impossible to ensure a safe environment.
As a result, we will not be reopening 1st June or for the foreseeable future*.
We deeply regret this – we have missed all the children tremendously over the past 8 weeks and hate having to let families down, but reopening is a risk we are not prepared to take.
Brian and Carol Turner.
* At least until social distancing is not deemed necessary.
** 2-year and 3-4 Year Funding.
